ROLES & PLOT

SUMMARY

Angels in America follows the lives of two struggling couples as they navigate homosexuality and the AIDs epidemic in 1985 New York City. The lives of these couples and that of a handful of other characters begin to intersect and connect in surprising ways. The play explores themes of love, sexuality, and illness in its humorous and honest story.

ROLES

Prior Walter — Occasionally works as a club designer or caterer, otherwise living very modestly but with great style off a small trust fund. Put simply, Prior is tragically fabulous, and uses humour and a camp-ish style to hide his true emotions form the outside world, and even himself.
Louis Ironson — A word processor for the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Louis struggles with loyalty, and is quick to give up and run from his problems. His relationship with Prior is something he thought he would never give up, but he finds himself at a crossroads when his fears overshadow his love.
Joe Pitt — The Chief Clerk for Justice Theodore Wilson of the Federal Court of Appeals, Second Circuit. He loves his wife, but he is unsure of why. Born and raised a Mormon, Joe has always known that homosexuality was not a truth he could live, even if he knew deep down that it was how he truly felt.
Harper Pitt — Joe’s wife. An agoraphobic with a mild valium addiction. She struggles with the concept of reality and falls easily to the beckoning of fantasy and dream worlds. She also struggles with truth, and comes up with silly stories to replace what is actually happening around her.
Roy Cohn — A successful New York lawyer and unofficial power broker. Avoidant and angry, Roy is disliked by many, but finds a soft spot in his stone heart for Joe Pitt. Roy is in denial about his own homosexuality.
Belize — A registered nurse and former drag queen whose name was originally Norman Arriaga; Belize is a drag name that stuck. He is a past lover of Prior.
